fxt2txt ia a DOS program and was produced before the Grand Theft Auto Ideas pages went up. This means a lot of people who don't know much about DOS have problems with it and email me for help. If that's you, you have two choices:
read the FAQ and see if it helps
get Gman instead, it is a Win95 program that can load and save FXT files, too
If you're playing DOS GTA because you never paid MS money for their expensive bug distribution program, fxt2txt is for you, and here is the (almost) original announcement from my web site:
I wrote a small program that can decode the *.FXT files into text files that contain every output message in the game! It can decode every byte and encode it back. Read FXT2TXT.TXT in the archive to find out more. Downloading this may spoil some of your fun as you can read every message without having to play the game to reach it!
Short Archive (20 kB) contains only the
FXT to TXT converter FXT2TXT.EXE (Version 1.1).
Get this if you
only want to read the messages.
Long Archive (40 kB) contains both
FXT2TXT and TXT2FXT and (slightly buggy) C++ Source Code.
Get
this if you want to create your own messages and more.
Mission editing can now include message editing! (Use a help sign near the starting point to explain the changes, for example.)
There's a message from Lara: [2605]. Do the numbers in message [2613] and [2617] mean anything? Message number [8787] points us to a good GTA Website ;-)
Question: There is a SPECIAL.FXT that has almost the same messages as ENGLISH.TXT, only "FUCK" is used wherever possible (in NYC). Is there a way to activate this with a cheatcode? Yes: use IAMGARYPENN to activate and IAMNOTGARYPENN to switch back to normal!
Enjoy! Put the files up on your site if you feel they don't spoil too much of the fun! Distribute them to others! I am interested in helping produce a game/map editor...
